The uprising burden on nature’s resources, the over-exploitation of already available resources, and the unprecedented demand of the rising population have coerced responsible businesses to take mandatory steps toward saving the planet. Businesses rethink their system to create a balanced and resilient world by integrating sustainability into our daily lives and preserving the natural resources we depend on. Sustainability is not just a trend but a fundamental approach necessary for our planet’s and future generations’ survival and prosperity. To converge with the sustainable development Goal- 12 (SDG 12), many organizations implement waste management practices such as composting to convert waste into valuable resources, recycling, reusing to reduce additional waste, redesigning products for sustainable use; and green practices such as installing energy-efficient appliances, digitizing the communication process, utilizing renewable sources of energy, optimizing energy through smart grids, etc. Further, to promote a sense of responsible production and consumption, implementing these practices requires a holistic and collaborative force of action among stakeholders.
The management of waste has become the most pressing and global issue. Industries are revolutionizing their business models with two main motives. First, to adhere to the legislative guidelines, and second to fulfill the demand of eco-conscious consumers. The directive policy on waste management in India states- “management of waste as a legal and social responsibility of waste generators and handlers” and states various strategical avenues to approach this situation. On the other side, the habit of eco-conscious consumers is inclined towards a sustainable lifestyle. Such consumers tend to make choices in their lifestyles comprising ethically sourced products, opting for recycled or recyclable packaging, sustainable modes of transportation, chemical-free cosmetics, locally sourced-plant-based edibles, and engage in advocacy of environment awareness campaigns. With these spotlights, many industries have set sustainability goals to reduce their environmental impact and promote long-term ecological balance. As a result, waste management across all industrial domains is becoming a central focus of industrial evolution, transforming how companies operate and contribute to a sustainable future. However, with its multi-faceted benefits, there is a dearth need for efficient infrastructure, sufficient funds for treatment and disposal, economic viability of recycled products, technological implementation for waste treatments, responsible behavior of consumers, and inconsistent and weak regulations.
